What Is Venous Insufficiency?

Venous insufficiency is a condition where the flow of blood through the veins is inadequate, causing blood to pool in the legs. It can be caused by several different vein disorders, but it’s most often caused by either blood clots or varicose veins.

Your treatment options depend on what’s causing the condition, but your doctor might recommend compression stockings and prescription medications. In more serious cases, you may need surgery. Not that I’m trying to scare you off, but I know you are very much aware of the wonderful powers enshrined in Alternative Medicines AKA Herbal Supplements which is what is making you read this piece of work here.

Alternative Treatments for Venous Disease

Welcome to the part you’ve patiently waited for. This is the part where I list 5 herbal supplements that helps alleviate venous insufficiency. Interest in alternative options for preventing, treating, and stopping the progression of venous disease continues to grow. Studies have shown encouraging potential for many herbal supplements and alternative medications, and current research promises to advance our understanding of these natural treatments.

However, I would be listing the 5 herbal supplements(herbs) that helps alleviate venous insufficiency and not ”herbal products”… having said that, you would need to pay good attention to the herbs I would be listing below and then look for herbal supplements that contain one or more of these herbs in them.

Horse Chestnut Extract

Horse chestnut extract, the common name for aesculus hippocastanum, is a promising natural medicine for treating chronic venous insufficiency. It is an anti-inflammatory herb that has been found to promote normal tone of the vein wall, thereby improving circulation through the veins.

The seeds of the horse-chestnut plant are found to be effective in treating CVI, according to the National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM). The seeds are pressed into an extract that contains an active ingredient called aescin, sometimes also spelled escin, that is used to promote healthy blood circulation in people who suffer from venous insufficiency and also hemorrhoids.

Butcher’s Broom

Butcher’s broom gets its name from the look of the plant, as the bush is filled with spiny green leaves that were used as a cleaning device. According to PeaceHealth, this herbal supplement contains substances that contain steroidal properties, which can tone veins that are damaged from insufficiency issues.

Butcher’s broom is the common name for ruscus aculeatus, a berry-producing evergreen shrub found in the Mediterranean. It is recognized for its positive effect on blood flow. Recently, European interest in the herb has focused on its potential for treatment of varicose veins, and it has been approved by Germany’s regulatory commission for herbal therapies as a treatment for chronic venous insufficiency. Research conducted with butcher’s broom has shown decreases in leg swelling, pointing toward its efficacy. Comprehensive safety studies, however, have not been reported.
Butcher’s broom is sometimes used along with vitamin C supplements for optimum results.

Gotu Kola

Gotu kola is an herbal supplement used across Asia to reduce swelling that is associated with venous insufficiency, according to UMMC. The leaves and stem of the plant are part of the parsley family, and are made into teas, tinctures and standardized extracts.

Gotu kola stimulates the production of collagen, a protein found in the fibrous tissue of blood vessels. Studies have reported its effectiveness in healing vein walls and tissues. It is currently available in supplement form and in topical form to treat wounds.

Bilberry is a plant, whose dried, ripe fruit and leaves are used to create oral preparations. Bilberry contains potent antioxidants called anthocyanosides, which strengthen blood vessels and capillary walls and improve red blood cells. Bilberry supplements are used to prevent and treat circulation problems, including chronic venous insufficiency.

Sweet Clover
Sweet clover is a biennial or perennial herb with flowering branches and leaves that have been used medicinally for thousands of years. Sweet clover contains coumarins, and when the plant is fermented, it produces dicoumarol, a potent anticoagulant.

It is sometimes used along with regular medicines for treatment of blood clots in the veins. Sweet clover is believed to support venous health and ease varicose veins, leg pain and heaviness, phlebitis and thrombotic conditions.

    • Please see the comment that I left for Ike Muonso just below. The supplements that the author so kindly referenced can be purchased at Health Food stores or on the internet. Many companies sell them.

  2. Such A nice information shared here. Varicose veins seem not painful earlier and can be treated with natural and home remedies too if they are treated in starting. But if we don’t take care of them at early, they can be a serious medical issue.

  3. I live in Nigeria and have the venous insufficiency condition. Please where and how can I get the herbal recipes you mentioned?

    • I, too, was diagnosed with venous insufficiency (venous stasis). My doctor suggested that I take Horse Chestnut, so I was glad to see it listed first. If you search the internet for any of the suggested supplements you will see many sources from which to purchase them.

      • May I ask the dosage that was recommended please? Are there any side effects or adverse reactions to worry about? I purchased Nature’s Way 250mg, 20% Aescin Standardized Chestnut and it has a recommended dosage of 1 capsule twice daily. I am a female, 47 at about 125lbs. Just get nervous following a standard dosage size weight varies from person to person.
